27th-Mar-2009 10:19 am - Firfox picture saves

In the old days while using IE right click saving an image saved it instantly from your disk cache. Whereas in FF right click save prompts a "downloading now" prompt followed by a download complete popup in your status bar. Just like when you are downloading a remote file. So this means FF saves the image from the internet to your disk not from the cache. I have been noticing this in all versions of FF from version 2.
22nd-Sep-2008 12:05 pm - The IE 7 clicking noise
I have been testing IE 7 for the last two weeks. And was quite irritated by the noise it makes when you click on a link.

So ran a search ie 7 click noise and someone sure enough had asked How do i turn off the clicking noise in IE7?

Answers provided:
a. get firefox!
b. I had that, i tried everything until in the end i went to a doctor and the clicking was inside my head all along. So i suggest you do the same.

Heh! Heh! Heh!

I find Firefox 3.x about the best browser now. IE 7 crashes once at least every session. Safari is boring! Chrome, man I have yet to figure whey they brought that one out.

PS:Correct answer for removing the clicking noise:

  • Go to Control Panel > Sounds and Audio devices

  • Click the 'Sounds' tab. In the window, scroll down to 'Windows Explorer' and in the sub menu, highlight 'Start navigation'

  • Pull down the drop down box below, where it currently says 'Start navigation' and choose '(none)' instead.

  • Click 'Apply', then click OK, and close the Control Panel.

16th-Jul-2008 12:27 pm - Interclue - Add-on for Firefox 3
Have you added the add-on Interclue for Firefox 3 yet? If you do you have an option to turn it off for sites you select. For those you don't you get a full preview for any link on that page. A life saver if you are going to a news site;-) So you see a news item like Hit-run women, 77 and 75, get life sentences, or Report: Airline bankruptcies loom but are not really interested in clicking to read, just hover your mouse arrow over the small icon to the end of the link and you get the full article in a second!
12th-Jul-2008 05:16 pm - Pending downloads - Firefox 3
In the earlier versions of Firefox if you closed your window when a download was in progress you would get a message telling you that the download would be lost. I had one downloading right now and I closed the window and got no message. I thought the download was over. When I started FF again I found that the download wasn't over. It restarted where it left and completed it.
12th-Jul-2008 11:28 am - Smart Location Bar - Firefox 3
The so called Smart Location Bar in Firefox 3 I now find is extremely versatile and useful. I almost don't require to use my bookmarks now. Key in a few [even a couple of] alphabets and you stare at the page you want to go to.

In one of the reviews I had found someone's suggestion on how to turn it off. I don't think I will be turning it off.

This is what I saw when I went to check the Deccan Herald site today.

5th-Jul-2008 03:37 pm - Scribe Fire - addon for Firefox
I have added Scribe Fire an add-on for Firefox, and this post is being made using this add-on. After adding this you press F8 to get its menu, configure your blog and you are ready to publish.

Edit: I haven't figured out how to add tags though! This tag was added manually later on.
PS: Don't see much use for this add-on since I use a stand alone editor.
3rd-Jul-2008 09:46 am - Daijiworld an attack site?!?
Google blocked Daijiworld today when trying to access Mangalore ref info for a Wiki article.

Reported Attack Site!
This web site at www.daijiworld.com has been reported as an attack site and has been blocked based on your security preferences.

So I clicked on "Why was this site blocked?" And here is the answer.

Why? )
28th-Jun-2008 10:15 am - Add-ons - Firefox 3
This post is for the benefit of those who don't use any of the add-ons on Firefox or have not idea what an add-on is in the first place, even if you have been using Firefox all these days. This is because after my last post on addons my aunt in Las Vegas e-mailed me to say "I use Firefox and have no idea what you are talking about "

I use the following add-ons to make my browsing experience a little better than the plain vanilla Firefox that I downloaded. All these are provided by third parties and we have to click ok on dire warnings not to install them if we have doubt etc. All are free, some of them plead for donations, ignore them! :-)

  • Adblock Plus As the name suggests it blocks all ads. While it cleans up your page, remember that some websites might go broke because of what we are doing. Heh!
  • British English Dictionary Essential for persons like me, it ensures that your typos are pointed out though not your grammar!
  • Google Toolbar
  • IE Tab When you come across those pesky websites that demand or require an IE browser, just click the icon on the bottom right hand corner on the status bar and you get IE in Firefox, and that website will work.
  • Image Toolbar This one adds those save etc etc icons on to your image for fast saving. See my post Image Toolbar. So no more right click saves.
  • Interclue This is a new addon I am using only in this version of FF. All it does is showup a small icon against links, any links including your LJ cuts, when you move your mouse over it, click it and it peeps into the cut or the website. This way you can read the comments posted by your friends on LJ posts without clicking on "read comments". It is like SnapShots in IE which also had a FF add-on, but found it very obtrusive and it conflicted with AbBlock and so I stopped using that.
  • Session Manager This add-on was suggested by [info]srgmpdn in 2006 when I mentioned Firefox kept crashing. But while it doesn't crash like before, it has an important feature where it remembers your last visited web pages. So I shut down today, come tomorrow and see the pages I was on the previous day. I find it very helpful.
Just for looks.
  • Better Gmail 2 Not really required, it removes the "no of invites left", gives GMail some colour, and a few other things. Ah ahem goes well with Colorful Tabs below.
  • Broadband Speed
  • ColorfulTabs It makes FF look like a high class bordello. Don't bother if you are colour blind;-) Just noted that it is written by an Indian called Varun.

You can easily remove any add-on, just as easily as you had installed it. Add-ons work only after you have restarted FF, and if uninstalled, will work until you restart.

I used to use a few more earlier, but some of them got merged into FF as new features.
27th-Jun-2008 09:55 am - No update notice! - Firefox 3
I e-mailed my nephew about the new Firefox as soon as I installed it here. He e-mailed back saying "Didn’t know it was out since it doesn’t auto update to it!!"

I have noticed this in FF, when I was running 1.xx it gave update notifications urging us to update as fast as possible to the new version. But when version 2 was released those running version 1.xx did not get an update notice. Though by magic everyone came to know about it.

So while running version 2.xx it kept giving update notifications but didn't announce v3 at all.

I think this is something for version 4 to sort out;-) Unless v3 has fixed it!!
