We watched 2012 yesterday evening. It was the sixth day and yet the theatre was not only full, all the folks had come ahead of the doors opening so that they wouldn't miss a single scene. And quite a gathering, there were 4 sari clad catholic nuns who occupied the topmost row, a Malayali group in front of us which included two burkha clad ladies and a Hindu lady all together. Behind us a bunch of Telugu speaking youngsters, one of whom was reprimanded by me for speaking on his phone.
The movie started at 7pm and ended at 9:55pm.
This is a disaster movie, a disaster of colossal means, beyond what you can imagine. But you may relax, since this cataclysmic natural disaster is not caused by your using of plastics, or your use of Hummers to pick the newspaper from the front lawn. Nope! Not at all. This one occurs due to excessive solar flare activity. Hah! Now that is a relief;-) I saying this since initially I thought this movie was depicting a disaster which was man made. And so I was very sceptical of watching it. But I saw the screen shots someone had mailed a few months ago, and man that was way too impressive.
Another thing is that disasters movies are usually a disaster themselves. Mostly due to large number of characters, who'll all demand equal screen time, special effects that go bad, lousy dialogues and so on. Here they have somehow managed to toe the middle to not get us all bored off.
They do have several time wasting moments. Like say you have seen movies where the bomb is set to go off in 60 seconds, instead of disabling it the hero will call his estranged wife and tell her he loves her for 360 seconds, while clock magically doesn't hit 60 six times. Yeah that kind of excruciating time waste moments to keep you on the edge of the seat. You will be mentally yelling "Come on you dumb bas***d get on the ****ing plane now!"
All in all a very remarkable movie, brilliantly made, and well presented and you will not get another from director Roland Emmerich since he has said this "I said to myself that I'll do one more disaster movie, but it has to end all disaster movies. So I packed everything in."
Watch their official
Youtube videos for the sfx/vfx. Only after you see the movie of course.
