Joy and Deepa had made a post each about people who are not like us or don't think like us, which reminded me that this post should be made sooner than later. Actually I had been sitting on it for a week.

Last month we were at the Empire Mall food court. There I saw SK sitting at a table with his wife, I chatted with and came away when his daughter came with the food tray.

Now SK is what I thought was a suave and sophisticated dude, the type who is at parties, who is comfortable with people and the like.

After he finishes his food he comes over and after saying something says "yeh sakkada birdeley kithi!" (I suppose all this belongs to the birdes?!") All this meaning the food stalls, and birdes' (pronounced beer-deys, ee as in reed) is a crude, uncouth term used by some Konkanis to refer to Muslims. It doesn't affect anybody since the Muslims have no idea what or how they are referred to in Konkani. But to us the person using that term is automatically a bigotted idiot, not a suave and sophisticated dude! And SK has Muslim friends that I know of!

All I could tell him was that Kakunje's definitely wasn't a birde place, and that for biryani (the sole stall that is run by a Muslim) we were better severed by birdes' rather than by a bhatre (a chap from the bhat community.)

He then walked from the inner hall to the outer terrace and came inside telling or rather exclaiming "it is so nice and cool outside!" "it is better if you sat outside than inside" and finally I had to tell "yeah I know, we have sat outside earlier" which is when he gets a rather foolish look on his face and says "I am coming here for the first time!"

A few days back when Suchitra went to pick Kavya from school, the Sister it seems told her (with a big grin) that she hit another girl and then went and hid under a desk. And refused to come out. They had to remove the chair and table to get her out. So we tried to "discuss" this "event" with her, and man you should have seen the way she was diverting our attention away from the topic on hand. She said "a girl vomited in class, and Bhakti looked at it and said yuck!"

I tried asking in the night, she gave a big yawn instead;-)

Yesterday when I went to drop her the Sister came out to advice her to sing loudly and to make action with the hands. They have that school day coming you know. You should see the action she makes with her hands while speaking to us about stuff, but in school apparently she decides to have fun:-)

Both the Sister and the teacher where laughing when they spoke about the hiding under the desk incident. But they said "she said sorry to the girl!" The girl as yet still remains unnamed.

I told them about she diverting our attention away while speaking about such "event", for which the Sister says "yes we know that, very cunning she is." :-)

Suchitra happened to see this on CNN in their programme called Untold Stories - Female peacekeepers. This page has the video of the programme. Looking at their blue uniforms they are from the Rapid Action Force, created by the Central Reserve Police Force or CRPF.

Do you know why a women force was sent by the UN! The videos tells me that there has been problems of abuse by male members of a UN force!
