3 Idiots
Suchitra and me watched 3 Idiots yesterday, the 8:30pm Tuesday show was full in the second week. Goes to show how popular this movie is. Supposedly based on 5 Point Someone, and yet till the interval there was nothing in the book that showed on screen. Chetan Bhagat is actually a big cry baby, he should be happy that he was given a rolling credit [which we missed anyway heh] today's paper says he is sorry that he was a cry baby [probably his lawyers said that was enough]

So the only commonality between the book and movie is that there are three boys going to an engineering college [not an IIT] and one of the character's family is shown exactly as in the book. Otherwise the story I should say is quite different from the book, 95% different to be safe. So CB should actually get only 5% of whatever he is getting from 3I

Amir is old, and however much you try doesn't and will not look 20, in fact he looks bad in many scenes. But he can act, and that he does well. Mahadevan and Joshi compliment him very well [the three were together in Rang De Basanti], Boman Irani and Kareena Kapoor have both put in wonderful performances. Her performance when she comes drunk to the hostel had all of us in splits.

Omi Vaidya as the geek [the 4th guy] deserves a special mention, also he is the only guy in the movie who ages after 10 years. All the others look the same as they did 10 years ago. I don't know who this guy is, never seen him before even in ads, and man he was hilarious [except maybe for the over done pissing scenes] he btw was raised in the US according to his wikipedia page. It also says he had a small role in a Hollywood movie called Arrested Development.

An extremly well made movie and a must see. The baby delivery scene isn't as bad as it is sounded out in some reviews. It was well made, and probably the most intense of the lot. And no Kareena doesn't direct the scene on YouTube [as one un-informed reviewer said it], they are on broadband via webcams. Is it possible in real life? This is a movie, in our movies Manoj Kumar has cured his dying dad Ashok Kumar by playing a tape recorder. Compared to that this was definitely possible;-)

What I liked best about the movie is the message that is sent out to parents and educators on the rat race that is getting into professional colleges [and trying to stay there].

nice... I think you are the only second person I know who says the movie is not entirely based on the book. In fact hardly based on the book. Ok, maybe it is 'based' on the book, but it is not the same story about which CB has been crying about.

I wanted to write a blog abusing him for his attitude, but am reserving my judgement till after I see the movie.

That is the writer of the movie speaking in the link above. But even if it was based on the book in full, CB should have taken extra care to see what kind of credit he gets and not after the movie was released. And that too only after it was confirmed that the movie was a big hit.

Funny thing is as per his report he mentions other people telling him what happened in the movie and not what he saw. So obviously he has yet to see the movie.

Seems to me that it was yet another publicity stunt, especially after the retraction by CB, both AK and he are smart enough to do that ..more so since CB suddenly retracted .. and remember, he had always kept his options open by saying the family said it, he hasn't seen it!

Suchitra's rating certainly makes me keen to see it, Prem's rating? well, you know, Prem's movie ratings start with a minimum 4, he is a generous guy :-) (you have my permission to tell Suchitra what I said :-)

and you forgot to mention, that this is expected to be a bigger grosser than Sholay, now that is impressive for a movie which I thought belonged to the multiplex genre.

You might give less stars Usha, but I am sure you will enjoy it as much as we did;-)

As I said CB is a big cry baby. From a column that appeared today he got only Rs 10 L for his 'adapted from' credit line [rolling not fixed]. If he wanted fixed main credit he should have demanded before signing.

Why didn't he do that? Well you remember the previous 'adapted from' flim 'Hello' was a thundering failure. So he just signed thinking he made a cool Rs 10 lakhs. Now he feels 'What only that much?'

And yeah he hasn't seen the movie and makes judgement from what his mommy and wife saw.

saw the movie couple of days back. It was fun, though a little preachifying. I certainly think that there is not much taken from the book (I found the book painful reading, by the way), the only book I enjoyed was his latest..two states or something like that..pretty good story about inter state weddings :-) my nephew by marriage (a punjabi) said he could so relate to it :-)

anyway, one must appreciate that Aamir Khan takes up these films with messages..my sister who works with children with learning difficulties says her counselling is so much easier after TZP.

Boy oh Boy, what a mess this is. :)

hear the story from Mr.Chetan himself from the link below. He's got his own angle to it.

http://www.chetanbhagat.com/blog/

"Mona Lisa is still a work of art from McAngelo. Nobody can say, i framed it well and its my now completely my work." :) even if he's the legal owner of this master piece.

The circumstances of his outburst inline with the success of this movie makes people doubt his intension's, that we may never know.

Overall, i thnk mr Chetan got it wrong with the contract. He should have never signed it with rolling credits, but real credits. Maybe in that case, we would not be seeing 3 idiots, would we?

CB obviously has yet to read 'What they don't teach you at IIT/IIM' heh! Man he should have read the contract before signing. Movie guys are notorious for not honouring agreements and so on. Obviusly CB had no idea what a rolling credit was. He probably assumed it was the credit that appears in the begining.

I should really check this movie out. All my friends have seen this movie and don't want to come with me to see it :-). And btw, Arrested Development is a TV series here in US. Apparently this actor has been on The Office too, another widely seen TV series in US.

Whatever be the reality of adaptation from novel to the movie, I think Bollywood should develop the habit of crediting the sources. Both Slumdog Millionaire and the novel 'Q & A' differ so much. But the credits of SM still give a 'Based on the novel' credit for Q & A and its still nominated in the 'Best Adapted Screenplay' category in Oscars.

It is a fun movie to watch, even alone:-)

Vikas Swaroop was lucky to have any credit. Only .5% of his book was used in the movie.

That is true, but that's just how its done. So CB does have a right to ask for a credit. But then I dont know why he's crying so much when he's already signed a contract that clearly mentioned 'rolling credits'.

Now he's apologized, and now the whole controversy seems just a waste of time :

I think CB thought this will yet another stupid movie that will bomb like the previous. So he signed, took the money, and left with a wink and a smile on his face. When he found that the whole world was watching it, he must have felt silly that he got only Rs 10L and no credit too. I am pretty sure he knew what a rolling credit was, and also that he would have had a lawyer look at it too.
